THE INSIDER: Why did you decide to chronicle your creative journey with a documentary film?
JOHN SIMS: It seems natural to me that film maximizes options in terms of unpacking the inevitable complexities of abstract ideas to a large and demographically diverse pool of people. While historical fidelity is a hit or miss proposition, films are a very good approximation. Also beyond commitment to content and history, I aim to bring a strong art element to the documentary process, making the case that art as conceptual technology not only helps us illustrate but enables us to the see differently and expand critically.
THE INSIDER: Tell us about how math, visual art and poetry intersection and spark in your amazing work.
JOHN SIMS: The triad of mathematics, art and poetical forms an alliance of expression and language that pierce the heart of human consciousness — the evidence of both self-awareness and knowledge acquisition. This Triads as agents of the Minds, Hand and Heart has inspired me to think about the connecting structures that may create social movement and group call and in response motion.
THE INSIDER: What do you hope audiences will take from the movie?
JOHN SIMS: The answer to the question is very simple — to think differently, which is the theme of the Film Festival. But not just differently, which may or may not be helpful but rather in a way that embraces the double expresso shot of creativity and analysis.
