OUTREACH AND EDUCATION AT THE 7TH ANNUAL SARASOTA FILM FESTIVAL
Presented by Philip Roy Financial

SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Through the Sarasota Film Festival’s Outreach and Education Department approximately 9,000 students from over 10 counties participate in various programs that offer insight into the exciting world of film. Programs are made possible by the financial support from the Academy Foundation of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Kids Trip
Each weekday morning, elementary school students will come to the festival grounds to view "Imaginings", a package of short family films. They will also meet visiting filmmakers, representatives from the National Film Board of Canada, and have access to behind-the-scenes exhibits at the festival.

The Film Foundation’s Story of Movies, presents To Kill a Mockingbird
The Story of Movies is an innovative interdisciplinary curriculum introducing students to classic cinema and cultural, historical and artistic significance of film. Created by the Film Foundation, in partnership with IBM and Turner Classic Movies, The Story of Movies helps students think contextually about the role of film and expression in American culture and helps foster creativity. The Film Festival will screen To Kill a Mockingbird and present The Story of Movies’ coinciding curriculum through a teacher’s workshop.

Filmmakers in the Classroom
Visiting filmmakers will travel to area high school and college classrooms to talk with students in our Filmmakers in the Classroom program. In the "Out of the Darkness" portion of this program, the provocative issue of domestic violence is brought to the surface through the film "Battered, Bruised and Broken" and brought to life through an interactive theatre experience.

Sarasota Herald Tribune and Tampa Tribune’s Newspapers in Education Program
Through the Newspapers in Education edition presented by the Sarasota Film Festival, classrooms in over ten counties will receive discussion and curricular connections for students to explore the many facets of filmmaking.

Scholarships
The festival has established two scholarships for promising film students attending Florida universities and colleges. This year’s Gerd-Petrick Scholarship will be presented to a student at the Florida State University Film School. The Dr. John Welch Scholarship will be awarded to a student studying film at Manatee Community College.
