2010 Festival : youthFEST



The breadth and depth of the Sarasota Film Festival's Outreach and Education Program is unprecedented.  Our mission is to inspire, educate, and entertain the community through curriculum in FREE filmmaking, film critique, and movie screening programs.   During the festival, admission is free for all youthFEST family film selections for those 12 years-old and under.

Young Filmmaker s Showcase Call for Entries!
Deadline: March 1, 2010 

In Competition -  Lights, Camera, Local
Student filmmakers (age 18 and under) from the state of Florida are invited to submit a short film completed any time within the past two years.  Limit 2 entries per director.  Selected films will be screened and juried during the festival.  Promising Young Filmmaker Award and scholarship prize awarded to the winning films at the Hollywood Nights youth event. 
 
> Out of Competition - International Showcase
Student filmmakers (age 18 and under) from around the world are invited to submit a short film completed any time within the past two years.  Limit 2 entries per director.  Selected films will be screened during the festival.  Recognition at the Hollywood Nights youth event.

Submission Guidelines:

  • No submission fee
  • Submitting via Withoutabox.com is preferred.  Submissions not entered through Withoutabox.com will be considered only if pr ogramming space remains open after all WAB submissions have been considered.  Must include a contact e-mail address and phone number.   
  • Deadline: Must be recieved (not postmarked) by March 1, 2010.  Films will be selected and entrants notified by March 6, 2010.
  • Maximum Total Run Time: 10 Minutes (including credits)
  • Send TWO discs with project in Qui cktime Format (.mov); DVD format accepted as a supplement.  Must include Title, Director, School, Total Run Time, and Without A Box Submission Number (or Telephone Number) on disc.
  • Must include a photocopy of current student identification card or name, address, and phone contact for current school

Descriptions of the FREE 2010 Outreach and Education programs are listed below.  Click the link in each description to download the program guidelines and applic ation.  Be sure to read all application instructions before completing.  There is no participation fee for these programs and space is limited.  Applications are considered on a rolling admissions basis so apply early!


FOR STUDENTS 

> Reel Life Studio Sarasota: Dogme 95 Challenge  **PROGRAM FULL**
Students are introduced to the Dogme 95 filmmaking style through lectures, workshops, and screenings and will then have one week to complete their own 5-minute Dogme 95 film.  Films will screen as part of the Hollywood Nights Student Cinema Showcase followed by an awards ceremony. > Kids Reel Life Studio: Animation Station  **PROGRAM FULL**
Students are introduced to the art of stop-motion animation filmmaking as they adapt a screenplay (from Florida Studio Theatre's Write-A-Play program), build sets, construct characters, and make their own short film.  Films will screen as part of the Hollywood Nights Student Cinema Showcase followed by an awards ceremony.  Students in grades 4 and 5 may apply.  CLICK HERE for the Kids Reel Life Studio program guidelines and application.  

 
 




FOR TEACHERS


> Junior Jury @ New Gate School   **PROGRAM FULL**
New Gate School Junior Jury members  will screen the short film programs for this year's youthFEST while learning how to analyze the film, think critically about their opinions, and understand aspects of film production and theory.  The Jury announces the Best Family Short Film Award and hosts a screening of the winning film at the Hollywood Nights Student Cinema Showcase.  These students also help organize and host Kids VIP Trip, gaining valuable, behind-the-scenes festival experience.  
 





> Classroom Critic  **PROGRAM FULL**
Movies introduce students to the art of filmmaking and emphasize cultural and media literacy. Pre-festival, classes will screen a short film selected for the festival's youthFEST and learn about the basics of film analysis and critical review. Selected Kid Critic reviews will be published in The Observer. Teachers of grades 6, 7, and 8 may apply. CLICK HERE for the Classroom Critic program guidelines and application.
 

> Youth Screenwriters Cir cle   **PROGRAM FULL**
The Youth Screenwriters Circle invites aspiring high school student writers into the film community.  Students learn the in-and-outs of screenwriting with a month-long workshop program and leave with a completed short screenplay.  Selected students will have their screenplays performed by a local acting company at the Hollywood Nights Student Cinema Showcase.

Youth Screenwriting Workshop
If screenwriting is already a part of your curriculum, your class may benefit from this one-day, in class workshop where students are introduced to various techniques of critiquing, improving, and rewriting their existing screenplays-in-progress.  Students will learn the basics of screenplay composition, methods of constructive critique, and strategies for preparing and fine-tuning a final draft.  Teachers of grades 6-8 may apply.  CLICK HERE for the Youth Screenwriting Workshop program guidelines and application. 
 

> Kids VIP Trip
Kids VIP Trip facilitates free weekday morning field trips to the theatre where classes will watch a selected feature film or short film program.  The rest of the day is spent immersed in culture at the Embracing Our Differences exhibit.  Film programs are available for Grades 1-12.  CLICK HERE for the Kids VIP Trip program guidelines and application.  **You must be scheduled for Kids VIP Trip before reserving busses through Embracing Our Differences.

As of 3/8/2010 the remaining openings for Kids VIP Trip are as follows:

Monday 4/12 - 11:15am - Middle School - 150 seats
Wednesday 4/14 - 10:00am - High School - 80 seats







> Filmmaker Spotlight
Filmmaker Spotlight brings traveling filmmakers from around the world whose work has been selected to screen in the festival into high school and college classrooms for screenings and discussions of their experiences in the industry. HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS STUDENT CINEMA SHOWCASE


To celebrate their accomplishments in the spotlight, students and families are invited to kick-off the festival at the Hollywood Nights Student Cinema Showcase-- an annual, highly anticipated youth block party complete with screenings, performances, award ceremonies, food, and live music!
