Camp Widow

Camp Widow is a gathering for widowed people by widowed people. Over the course of three days, attendees speak candidly about death, forge connections with others over shared experiences of loss, and find ways to navigate the tricky waters of grief. Founded by Michele Neff Hernandez, who suddenly became a widow at age 35 when her husband died in a bike accident, the camp offers a way to both recognize tremendous loss, while at the same time celebrating continued life. The film follows an ensemble of campers who are weary of platitudes about grief, and speak to one another from a place of radical honesty that is by turns heartbreaking and darkly hilarious, embracing irreverent humor as a cathartic means of self-expression. This documentary shows the transformative power and therapeutic value of human connection, among those who have experienced loss and trauma. Ultimately, the film asks viewers to think about how we can recognize the grief of others, as well as find resilience during loss in our own lives.

The Stamp Thief

Part detective story, part heist film, and part historical reckoning, The Stamp Thief is an engrossing cat-and-mouse journey that delves into a decades-old mystery rooted in the Holocaust. The film reveals the story of a rogue Nazi officer tasked with cataloging the valuables of Jews sent to concentration camps. Rather than aiding the victims, he seized the opportunity to steal millions of dollars worth of rare stamps and buried them in his home—now in modern-day Poland. In a real-life, Argo-like mission, former Seinfeld producer Gary Gilbert embarks on a daring quest to uncover the truth and recover the stolen stamps. Disguising his investigation as a movie shoot, Gilbert seeks to return the stamps to their rightful heirs, delivering a small yet powerful act of justice more than 75 years after the Holocaust.

Director Charlie McDowell’s stunningly-shot film brings Jansson’s most beloved characters to life and celebrates the fierceness of all-encompassing love. Sally

Sally Ride became the first American woman to blast off into space, but beneath her unflappable composure was a secret. Sally’s life partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy, reveals their hidden romance and the sacrifices that accompanied their 27 years together. Cristina Costantini’s rich portrait of astronaut Sally brings a fullness to her life that goes beyond the headlines of her trailblazing voyage past Earth’s atmosphere. Costantini skillfully weaves together the dual threads of Ride’s story: the private romance she shared with her partner and the professional trajectory of her time in the space program that saw her contend with overt sexism and homophobia, prompting her secrecy. Rare archival footage brings the viewer behind the scenes to witness NASA training and missions, while press appearances reflect the media frenzy Ride was subjected to both before and after her historic first flight. O’Shaughnessy takes a fitting central role in recounting her beloved Ride’s story and the legacy she left behind that inspires countless women and girls to dream for the stars.

The Librarians

The banning of books in school libraries, an especially hot topic in 2022/23 news cycles, may not feature high in the headlines given all that’s happened since. But it’s still going on. Kim A. Snyder’s acclaimed documentary profiles select librarians who find themselves on the culture war frontlines uniting to combat book banning and defending intellectual freedom amid censorship in Texas, Florida, and beyond. Their opponents include conservative school boards, censorship groups and publicity-hungry politicians, among others. A cautionary tale and rallying cry, Snyder captures how these librarians transform their seemingly studious profession into a bold stand for freedom.

River of Grass

River of Grass addresses the Florida Everglades’ past, present, and future through Marjory Stoneman Douglas’s groundbreaking book, The Everglades: River of Grass (1947) which transformed popular perception of the land from a worthless swamp into a valuable river. Marjory was a Miami-based journalist, suffragist, and advocate for the Everglades until her death at 108 years old. Over haunting Everglades landscapes and an otherworldly soundscape, Marjory’s observations of a shifting and developing South Florida contextualize present-day scenes in which a diverse cross-section of people navigate their relationship with a compromised place. Positioning past and present directly in conversation with one another, Florida native (and New College graduate) Sasha Wortzel has created a fierce yet loving capture of the Everglades’ complexity and beauty and reveals how historical events inextricably shape the present. Together the stories build a complex collective map of a unique and endangered place.

Beyond the Gaze: Jule Campbell’s Swimsuit Issue

In the 1960s, at the height of the Mad Men era, Jule Campbell shattered glass ceilings by transforming a struggling magazine into a media empire: the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, the most annually anticipated annual publication. Campbell transformed the magazine with her vision to showcase female beauty in a tasteful, artistic manner. Daughter Jill’s documentary chronicles her 32-year reign, where she championed intelligence and empowered supermodels like Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, Roshumba Willams and many others who recall the era and working with her.
