Kids VIP Trips provide film- screening field trips free of charge to the Regal Hollywood 11 Cinemas for more than 2,000 area students. This program is in partnership with Embracing Our Differences, a local nonprofit that focuses on diversity and the arts in our community. The students get to see an age-appropriate selection of films from around the world that both entertain and inspire their curiosity.

Can you make a film in a weekend? The 2019 Sarasota Film Festival gives aspiring filmmakers a great opportunity not only to make a short film during the festival but also have it play on the big screen in front of a live audience. Participants create a short film based on given elements and chosen
themes, having just one weekend for everything – from idea to delivery. The filmmakers are recognized by awards and prizes, including best film, the audience award, best cinematography, best acting, and more. 

Riverview High School IB Academy Awards and Showcase is an event established to showcase films produced by the IB Film Program students and is the culmination of their work. This black tie event and awards show honors the students’ film production process, builds community awareness to the art and education of film, and celebrates the students’ thesis films in an Academy Awards®— style setting. 

A joint PSA competition, organized in partnership with the Sarasota County School Board. The contest involves local middle and high school students creating public service announcements on a variety of topics, while competing for prizes over $12,500. 

The community is invited to discover a hidden but exciting part of its past at a fundraiser for the film program in Booker High School’s Visual and Performing Arts magnet. All proceeds go to the program. A reception and discussion will follow a showing of the documentary “Into the Storm.” The film explores the year that changed Booker and the city, as the teenage Tornadoes fight to bring home a state title – and stop the forces threatening to close their school. 

SFF Education and the buildOn Foundation are partnering to present a special screening of the new Netflix film THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND, about a thirteen year old boy in Malawi who invents an unconventional way to save his family and village from famine, based on the true story of William Kamkwamba. SFF Education partnered with the buildOn Foundation to engage local students in impactful community service, helping raise funds to build a school in Malawi, Africa. Preceding the screening, SFF will host a brief presentation featuring past buildOn participants who worked to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy for students in impoverished countries. The panelists will speak about their powerful experiences and show videos.
